logineer Supports the Fight against Blood Cancer

Christmas tree, cookies and mulled wine – the Christmas party at our Hamburg location was full of Advent cheer. It also provided a wonderful opportunity for logineer to do something for a good cause and support a campaign against blood cancer – the ‘Blut transportiert’ (‘blood transports’) initiative: Numerous logineer employees had their stem cells typed and registered as donors.

High Demand for Stem Sell Donations

Every year, around 13,000 people in Germany are diagnosed with blood cancer. For many, a stem cell donation is their only chance of survival – including many children. That is why more than 3,000 stem cell donations are needed in our country every year. However, the search for a suitable donor is often difficult, as the tissue characteristics of the patient and the donor must match almost 100 per cent. Only 30 per cent of those affected find a donor within their family. For 70 per cent, a suitable external donor must be found. The chance of a match is often 1 in 20,000 or less.

‘Blut transportiert’ – an Initiative of the Logistics Industry

logineer is therefore delighted to have become one of more than 60 partners in the ‘Blut transportiert’ initiative and, together with them, has now carried out its first stem cell donation typing campaign during Advent. ‘Blut transportiert’ is an association of companies from the logistics industry with the aim of supporting the fight against blood cancer and other diseases of the hematopoietic system. The matching hashtag is #Logistikbewegt

It's two things that we're really excited about:

  • Supply chain as a guiding principle: The initiative combines the idea of blood circulation as a transport route in the human body with the work of the logistics industry: Just as blood carries nutrients to every cell, logistics ensures that vital goods reach people.’ This is what the name ‘Blut transportiert’ (‘blood transports’) stands for.
  • Internationality: The typing characteristics of potential donors are entered into an international database. This is important because blood characteristics vary slightly between nationalities. This benefits people all over the world – including fellow citizens from other continents who need a stem cell donation in Germany.

logineer Staff Show Great Interest in Stem Cell Typing

Even though taking part in the campaign was totally optional for logineer colleagues, people from all over Germany got involved: at the Hamburg headquarters, the Frankfurt am Main and Bremen offices, and even from their home offices. Those who mainly work remotely got their test kits sent to their homes by post.

It only takes a few minutes to do this typing: a swab is taken from the mouth using a bud, sometimes wrapped in a heart-shaped lollipop. It's totally painless and hassle-free. The swabs are then collected and analysed by various institutions, and the data is collated in a large donor database. logineer works together with Düsseldorf University Hospital on this project.

Then, if a suitable donation is found for a sick person via this database, the stem cells can either be taken directly from the donor's blood or extracted from their bone marrow.

Campaign for a Good Cause to be Repeated

The enthusiastic response from employees convinced logineer's management that we should continue to support the fight against blood cancer in the future. ‘It was the right decision to invest time and money in this campaign and to forego sending Christmas gifts to business partners this time,’ says logineer Managing Director Pascal Eggert. The plan now is to carry out similar typing campaigns next year at logineer's locations in the USA and India.

Of course, it would be wonderful if one of our donations could save the life of someone suffering from the disease. However, we will probably never know, as the entire campaign is subject to very strict data protection rules, and rightly so.
